This Friday at Northside Tavern, from 10pm to 2am, Mudcat will once again back our beloved mentor Beverly “Guitar” Watkins, for her 78th Birthday! Hope you can Make it! You won’t regret it!
This coming Saturday, April 8th, the original power/pop band I record, and perform with will be performing the song selected for us, Rock And Roll ( The Velvet Underground), for this annual event, which raises money for the Songs For Kids nonprofit, which performs music for kids in hospitals. Over the course of several weekends, 500 different bands perform 1 song each which has been selected for them. It’s always a blast to watch, and a great way to contribute to this great organization!
Just finished performing with Mudcat, Cool John Ferguson, Roy Lee Johnson, Essie Mae Brook, and others, in yet another amazing Chicken Raid at Northside Tavern, honoring the memory of Mr Frank Edwards! Many artists also performed over the March 24, 25 weekend. Truly a special event!
Mudcat just returned from Alabama after playing the late Willie King’s ‘Freedom Creek Festival’. Willie King was featured in Martin Scorsese’s film about the Delta blues, ‘Feel Like Going Home’. We’ve performed at his festival for many years. I even had the opportunity to back up harmonica player Jerry Portnoy in 2009! He played with the Muddy Waters’ band in the 70’s, and has toured the world with Bonnie Raitt, and Eric Clapton, and his own band.
What the…?, the original power/pop trio I play with just finished performing at The Earl for the ‘500 Songs For Kids’ Benefit, covering Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Little Wing’. I have performed at this benefit for 7 consecutive years, with Mudcat, Orange Hat, What the…?, Rob Alex, and the Todd/Dees band, sometimes with several of them several years! I strongly urge that you check out the songsforkidsfoundation.org to see the amazing work they do for kids!
I will soon be counseling my 8th summer session with Chicago Joe’s Rock n’ Blues Camp, beginning June 9th. This is essentially a school of rock style camp that assembles groups of kids into 5 or 6 bands, and helps them choose, learn, rehearse, and perform 4 songs for family and friends at an end of week concert. It never fails to be an amazing transformational experience! A number of bands that started in previous camp sessions have gone on to perform regularly for clubs, and festivals around town for years! CNN did a feature on us, and one of those bands last year! You can check it out, see other videos/photos, get info on the other counselors, and see updates, and testimonials from alumni at rockandbluescamp.com
